We Talk to The Jacksons...

How The Jacksons Iconic Jute Bags Come to Life...

At Caroline Gardner, we love brands that champion thoughtful, sustainable design. We caught up with their team to talk about the incredible journey, seven steps, over three months, that brings each handmade bag into the world...

Step 1: Where does it all begin?

It starts with our golden fibre, jute, which grows rapidly like a weed on marginalised land. It needs very little water, no fertilisers, and actually absorbs a lot of carbon dioxide while it grows, making it incredibly low impact.

Step 2: How is the jute harvested?

During the monsoon season, we soak the harvested jute to separate the fibres, then comb and dry them under the sun. The bundles are then carried by bike or motorbike to village jute centres for the next stage.

Step 3: What happens to the fibres next?

The fibres are twisted by hand into strong cords. This is skilled work done by women who specialise in making sure the jute is evenly twisted and durable. Once twisted, the cords head back to the village centre for dyeing.

Step 4: The dying process

We work with a specialist dye centre to clean and dye the cords using Azo Free dyes. They are then dried in the sun, setting the vibrant, joyful colours before returning to the village jute centre to be made into bags.

Step 5: How do you turn those colourful cords into your signature bags?

Female artisans collect the dyed jute cord along with a pattern for the bag they’ll create. Using macrame, a traditional knotting technique, they handcraft each bag from their homes, working around family life and farming.

Step 6: Quality Control

When the quotas of bags are finished, they return to the village jute centres for thorough checks to ensure every piece is uniform and up to standard.

Step 7: The final step...

The finished bags go to our administration centre, where they’re sorted and allocated to orders. From there, they’re shipped to Dhaka and sent all around the world.

Three months, seven steps, and countless skilled hands.
We love seeing the values of sustainability, empowerment, and artistry woven into every Jacksons bag. A true celebration of handmade craft, and a joyful reminder of what’s possible when communities and creativity come together.
